Abstract

Objectives: Today, visual comfort is considered a fundamental component of man-made environments. Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to all factors affecting it. The present study was conducted as a systematic review to summarize the factors affecting visual comfort.
Methods: An electronic search was conducted in national and international databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed, Wiley Online Library, BMJ Learning, Springer, and ProQuest. Articles were searched using keywords, such as visual comfort, architectural features, space configuration, interior design, physical factors, and lighting.
Results: Among 135 articles, the full texts of 19 articles were finally reviewed. Questionnaires were used in 53.5% of studies, while device measurements were employed in 21.4%. Physical factors were found to have the most impact on visual comfort, accounting for 51.4% of the studies reviewed. Additionally, architectural factors, space configuration, and interior design accounted for 25.7% of the impact on visual comfort in the studies reviewed.
Conclusion: The improvement of visual comfort can be achieved by influencing factors like physical elements, architectural design, space configuration, and interior design, which can lead to reduced errors, improved performance, decreased injuries from falls, and an overall increase in quality of life.

Abstract

Objectives: Participatory ergonomics, with its focus on the active involvement of stakeholders in designing and improving work systems, can be proposed as a key strategy for sustainable environmental management. The present study aimed to explore the mechanisms of integrating ergonomic principles and employee participation to elucidate how environmental sustainability can be achieved in workplace settings.
Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted in the Iranian automotive industry. The participatory ergonomics program involved a 14-member expert team through weekly sessions consisting of two hours of theoretical training and one hour of practical application over three months. The primary objectives of the program encompassed comprehensive training on ergonomics checkpoints established by the International Labour Organization (ILO), integration of ergonomic principles with environmental sustainability considerations, and development of practical competencies to implement acquired knowledge in actual workplace environments.
Results: Following the completion of the participatory ergonomics program and a thorough assessment of workplace issues, the ergonomics team successfully developed fifty practical recommendations, 20% of which addressed environmental concerns. Through six months of sustained collaboration between workers and management support, ten of the proposed recommendations were implemented.
Conclusion: The application of participatory ergonomics principles, emphasizing stakeholder engagement in work system design, can serve as a pivotal strategy for sustainable environmental management. This approach not only enhances employees' physical and psychological well-being but also establishes an inseparable connection between technology, humans, and the environment by reducing occupational stress and natural resource consumption. Undoubtedly, interdisciplinary research in ergonomics and environmental sustainability can play a strategic role in achieving balanced development for future generations.

Abstract

Objectives: Musculoskeletal disorders, including back pain, are increasingly prevalent among school-aged children. Poor postural habits and improper backpack carriage are significant contributing factors. However, there is currently no comprehensive, standardized tool available to assess children’s knowledge of ergonomics related to spinal health.
Methods: This methodological study involved the development of a questionnaire through a seven-step process. Following the creation of the preliminary version and assessment of face validity, content validity was evaluated using the Content Validity Index (CVI) and Content Validity Ratio (CVR) by ten experts. The reliability of the instrument was assessed using a test-retest procedure with 15 students and internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient with a sample of 180 students.
Results: The final version of the questionnaire, entitled Kids’ Spine Ergonomics Awareness (KidSEA), comprised 13 items across three domains: "Spinal Anatomy," "Correct Posture," and "Ergonomics of Carrying School Supplies." The CVI and CVR for each item exceeded 0.79 and 0.62, respectively, indicating that all items were validated. Cohen’s kappa coefficient for individual items was above 0.41, and the overall Cronbach’s alpha was 0.74, demonstrating acceptable levels of reliability and internal consistency.
Conclusion: The KidSEA questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing knowledge of ergonomic principles related to spinal health in children. It can be utilized to evaluate health literacy concerning spinal care, design targeted interventions, and inform educational programs for children in the studied age group. Further studies are recommended to establish the validity of the instrument across different age groups.

Abstract

Objectives: As industrial systems become increasingly complex and technologically advanced, the human role in ensuring safety and efficiency remains indispensable. This study aimed to present a comprehensive review of Human Reliability Assessment research published between 2010 and 2023. It compares human reliability assessment (HRA) methodologies with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and lights-out manufacturing, identifies existing research gaps, and analyzes the analytical techniques employed and the industrial sectors addressed.
Methods: A systematic search of major scientific databases using domain-specific keywords yielded over 230 publications. After removing duplicate studies, 180 articles were selected for detailed analysis. Each article was evaluated based on methodology, industrial application, country, institutional affiliation, and publishing outlet.
Results: The results indicated that the most frequently applied approaches in HRA research were the systematic human error reduction and prediction approach (SHERPA), cognitive reliability and error analysis method (CREAM), and fuzzy mathematics. The United States, China, and South Korea emerged as leading contributors to this field. The findings revealed that neither qualitative nor quantitative methods alone are sufficient to fulfill the three core objectives of HRA: error identification, probability estimation, and control design. Therefore, a hybrid approach was recommended by integrating SHERPA and Tecnica Empirica Stima Errori Operatori (TESEO). SHERPA provides comprehensive coverage of error identification and the design of effective control measures, while TESEO facilitates rapid, conservative probability estimation. These methods provided a practical and efficient framework for achieving HRA objectives within operational constraints. Additionally, ten key research gaps were identified.
Conclusion: The SHERPA–TESEO hybrid framework presents a viable strategy for achieving the core goals of HRA. Nonetheless, a shift from static to dynamic and data-driven models is necessary in the context of intelligent environments and operator-free production. Recommended developments include revising SHERPA’s cognitive task classifications, recalibrating TESEO's adjustment factors, and integrating real-time data with human–artificial intelligence (AI) interaction. These advancements are expected to significantly enhance real-time prediction of human error risks and support timely intervention strategies.

Abstract

Objectives: Office staff in health networks are exposed to adverse psychosocial factors and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) associated with improper working posture, which may reduce productivity. The present study aimed to examine the relationships between psychosocial factors and WMSDs with productivity among administrative staff of a health network and to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational–ergonomic intervention on these outcomes.
Methods: This quasi-experimental pretest–posttest study was conducted among 150 employees of the Behbahan health network in Iran. Data were collected using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ III), the Hersey and Goldsmith ACHIEVE productivity questionnaire, and the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). Working posture was assessed using the Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) checklist in a random subsample (n=15). A three-month educational–ergonomic intervention was delivered in small groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 26), and statistical significance was set at 0.05.
Results: Overall psychosocial score was positively correlated with total productivity (r=0.633, p<0.01). The WMSDs demonstrated significant negative correlations with selected productivity dimensions (p<0.05). After the intervention, psychosocial dimensions and overall productivity improved significantly (p<0.001), with a marked increase in total productivity (2.82 to 4.03; Cohen’s d=1.51). The WMSDs decreased significantly (5.36 to 4.24; p<0.001). Moreover, no significant change was observed in the ROSA score (p=0.640).
Conclusion: The educational–ergonomic intervention improved workplace psychosocial conditions and reduced musculoskeletal complaints, thereby increasing productivity among administrative staff in the health network. In addition, it is recommended to conduct controlled studies.
